Multiple Vulnerabilities in Apple Products: A Critical Security Update
Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Apple products, the most severe of which could allow for arbitrary code execution. Successful exploitation of the most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow for arbitrary code execution in the context of the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.
Affected Devices:
1. Safari versions prior to 18.1.1
2. iOS versions prior to 18.1.1 and iPadOS versions prior to 18.1.1
3. iOS versions prior to 17.7.2 and iPadOS versions prior to 17.7.2
4. macOS Sequoia versions prior to 15.1.1
5. visionOS versions prior to 2.1.1
Vulnerabilities:
Two critical vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-44308 and CVE-2024-44309) have been identified and are reportedly being actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems. These flaws allow maliciously crafted web content to lead to arbitrary code execution and cross-site scripting attacks.
Recommendations:
1. Update Software: Apply Apple's stable channel update immediately after testing.
2. Implement Vulnerability Management: Establish and maintain a documented vulnerability management process.
3. Conduct Regular Scans: Perform automated vulnerability scans of externally-exposed assets monthly.
4. Penetration Testing: Establish a penetration testing program and conduct periodic external tests.
5. Apply Least Privilege Principle: Run software with non-administrative privileges.
